Aggregation switches

This hierarchy level, also known as the distribution layer, lies between the core and access layers. At LANCOM, we refer to it as the aggregation layer. This is where typical Layer 3 tasks such as DHCP server functionality take place, i.e. IP address management or the predefinition of network routes across one or more network segments, which greatly reduces the load on the router or any existing firewall. In smaller scenarios, they often form the top LAN layer (core) and the transition to the WAN gateway.
