The core forms the top layer and is the backbone of the network. Core switches mainly perform routing tasks in layer 3 (the network or switching layer) and switching in layer 2 (data link layer). This switch is mainly used in data centers and has the primary task of providing high performance, i.e. maximum data throughput. Essentially, it has the function of forwarding data packets as efficiently as possible, either from the WAN or Internet to the underlying switch layers or vice versa.
