High performance for enterprise WANs:
Free update from LANCOM Systems optimizes flexibility and performance with SD-WAN
Aachen, May 21, 2019—Significant gains in flexibility and performance of SD-WAN installations come with the latest software update from LANCOM Systems. With application routing and layer-7 application control, the German network infrastructure provider introduces two powerful optimizations for WAN. These enable significant increases in performance and efficiency, as well as greater stability at the branches and the central site. The update to LCOS 10.30 is available now as a free download.
Enterprise customers in particular are increasingly migrating their networks from MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) to software-defined WAN. The main drivers for this transition are greater flexibility, higher performance, and lower costs.
LANCOM addresses this trend with their latest software update. The firmware LCOS 10.30 equips VPN routers and gateways from LANCOM with additional features for high-performance SD-WANs, which work in combination with the LANCOM Management Cloud (LMC). The LMC is the world's first hyper-integrated management solution that automates and streamlines the deployment, management and maintenance of entire networks (WAN, LAN, WLAN) by means of a single, central cloud platform and state-of-the-art software-defined networking (SDN).
Improved performance for branches and central sites
A significant performance gain for modern cloud applications comes with the new SD-WAN application routing. At the branches, this feature detects the relevant applications and directs them straight to the Internet. Thanks to these local breakouts, local access to cloud applications is accelerated and load is relieved from the VPN route to the central site and the Internet connection there.
Layer-7 application control in LCOS provides complete control over local applications. These can be allowed, blocked, prioritized or limited as required. This allows, for example, mission-critical CRM applications to take precedence over less important services.
Further SD-WAN optimizations in the pipeline
At the same time, LANCOM is working on further SD-WAN optimizations, which will be introduced step by step from autumn 2019.
Dynamic path selection focuses on maximized stability. Dynamic selection routes each application over the best current connection. A typical example would be real-time applications such as telephony or videoconferencing: Should the DSL line fail, these applications will temporarily be redirected over alternative connections, such as LTE/4G.
The virtualization function SD-WAN VPN Large Scale Acceleration aims to provide significantly more efficient network structures. Whereas a separate VPN tunnel was previously required for each virtual context, these will now be virtualized within a single tunnel. In the event of a large-scale DSL failure or power outage at the data center, there is only one VPN tunnel to be reestablished. This massively accelerates disaster recovery, especially for large networks with thousands of locations.
