LANCOM LN-830U: Wi-Fi 5 access point with IoT readiness

Aachen, February 05, 2019—Network infrastructure supplier LANCOM Systems is supplementing its WLAN portfolio with a new Wi-Fi 5 access point featuring IoT readiness. The LANCOM LN-830U has a USB port that enables a wide range of IoT devices to be easily integrated into WiFi infrastructures. In contrast to devices with a permanently integrated IoT module, this access point offers maximum versatility and future-proofing in terms of the wireless IoT technologies employed.

IoT networks interconnect physical and virtual objects to facilitate the exchange of data and information. Typical examples include sensors, smart home appliances, digital room signs, and electronic shelf labels.

IoT devices are largely networked by radio, using a variety of wireless technologies such as modified ZigBee variants (retail IoT), Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or various wireless offshoots. There is no uniform “IoT wireless standard”, and new IoT radio technologies are emerging in rapid cycles.

LANCOM is addressing these network-connectivity challenges with its new IoT-ready Wi-Fi access point LN-830U. Instead of using a permanently integrated IoT radio module, this access point simply uses a USB port to integrate IoT devices into wireless networks. This modular approach allows companies to use the appropriate IoT radio modules without having to replace the underlying infrastructure.

High-performance hardware with a strong protection profile

The LANCOM LN-830U uses four internal MIMO antennas and has been developed for discreet operation in a wide variety of industries. Its two Wi-Fi modules—1 x Wi-Fi 4 (IEEE 802.11n) and 1 x Wi-Fi 5 (IEEE 802.11ac)—provide data rates of up to 867 Mbps. It also upgrades to be a powerful Wi-Fi hotspot.

Power is supplied either by PoE (IEEE 802 3af) or by a power supply unit. The USB port is concealed in an internal cable duct to protect the radio modules from theft.

Maximum Wi-Fi security is ensured by comprehensive security features such as WPA3-Personal, IEEE 802.1X (WPA3-Enterprise, WPA2-Enterprise), and IEEE 802.11i with WPA2 and AES encryption. Furthermore, the access point supports virtualization features such as multi-SSID and VLAN.

Efficient commissioning thanks to SDN & cloud

Like all current LANCOM access points, the LN-830U offers maximum versatility in operation: It operates either autonomously, with WLAN Controllers, or even managed by the LANCOM Management Cloud (LMC). The LMC is the world's first hyper-integrated network management solution on the market. It enables the highly automated installation of even the most complex networking infrastructures by means of software-defined networking (SD-WAN, SD-LAN, SD-WLAN).

The LN-830U is designed for a service life of many years. Operating system updates are available free of charge several times per year and keep the Wi-Fi technically up to date for years on end.

The LANCOM LN-830U is available now at a price of EUR 549 excluding VAT. The 10-piece bulk package costs EUR 5,299 excluding VAT.
