LANCOM Systems Delivers New Update of Operating System LCOS 8.82

High-performance Package for WLAN Hotspots

Aachen, August 28, 2013 - LANCOM Systems, the leading German manufacturer of professional solutions for VPN network connectivity and wireless LAN infrastructures, has upgraded its LCOS operating system offering now many new features. The focus is on easy-to-install yet powerful WLAN hotspots for the hospitality and leisure industries, for businesses, and the educational sector. New is the support of the leading management solutions used in the hotel industry, including Micros Fidelio. Also new is the support of Hotspot 2.0/Passpoint according to the WLAN standard IEEE 802.11u, as used by smartphones and tablets to login to WLAN hotspots fully automatically and with secure encryption.

Easy setup, user-friendly operation, many features

The new design of the LANCOM hotspot solution allows hotspots of any size to be commissioned quickly and easily. The spectrum ranges from small hotspots with a single WLAN router or access point to controller-based, public wireless networks with hundreds of devices.

The solution offers numerous login options: Anonymous after accepting the terms and conditions; using a user name and password; using access vouchers; or by sending passwords via SMS. For security reasons, the data traffic from the hotspot can be completely separated from the rest of the LAN. Different user groups can be assigned distinct bandwidths. This allows the implementation of VIP offers, for example.

A considerable gain in convenience comes with the option to detect known WLAN users, who can automatically login to the hotspot without having to re-enter their credentials.

Integration in leading hotel management systems

Another new feature is the support of property management systems (PMS) with the FIAS interface, such as Micros Fidelio, which can be used for the accounting of WLAN hotspot usage. Identification of the user and the billing of the costs for Internet usage can be set up to use the guest's name and room number, for example. This function is optionally available for a fee.

Hotspot 2.0 – merging of cellular networks and WLAN hotspots

With the support of Hotspot 2.0, LANCOM WLAN hotspots are as simple to use as cellular communications: Smartphones, tablets or laptops detect suitable hotspots and automatically login with SIM card data, certificates, or user name and password. No other login data are required. The authentication process and data transmission are encrypted, ensuring that users can access public hotspots as securely as cellular networks. Smartphones supporting Hotspot 2.0 are available now, and in autumn 2013 software upgrades will be available for many more devices.
