Unpack and connect the device. This job is unavoidable, whatever networked world you live in. Once the device is cabled and powered up, the differences become clear:
In the old world, this is where the real work began. Without the support of software and cloud control, an expert network administrator first has to manually instruct the component on how to behave on the network. From the command line interface (CLI) or by web interface, detailed configuration steps are taken to prepare the router, access point, switch or firewall for smooth operation on the network.
And every mistake in these settings has consequences: In the best case, a single user meets with a blocked port and cannot access an application. In the worst case, a piece of malware is up to no good because an incorrect filter setting in the firewall allowed it into the company network.
Even for experienced network specialists, this kind of ground-up configuration of a fully-fledged firewall, for example, can mean several hours of concentrated work. And if your specialist has to travel to another site as well, one or more working days can easily be lost.
On the other hand, the new world of cloud-based network management means that after unpacking and connecting up, the work is pretty much done already.
The LANCOM Management Cloud and the roll-out process in particular are designed for ease of use and efficiency: Anyone who can open packages and operate a smartphone can also integrate new components into the network.
This is because the cloud-enabled LANCOM device comes accompanied by its cloud-ready leaflet. Thanks to the serial number barcode on the device and the packaging, and the cloud PIN on the leaflet, it only takes two scans with the smartphone – and the device is part of the cloud clan.
With a portfolio that is 90% cloud-ready – although mounting materials or cables are not expected to be in the cloud for years to come – this means a particularly smooth and rapid expansion of the network, even by entire groups of devices.
Within minutes and without any specialized knowledge, a janitor or anybody at all can commission any network component reliably and error-free – with just five simple steps on a smartphone:
And it gets even easier: If the system administrator prepares the devices in advance, the LANCOM Management Cloud works without any authentication necessary on-site: Components can be preconfigured in detail before they arrive at the desired site.
Set the device names, choose the device model, decide on the required firmware, set the location, and set up any detailed configurations such as the DSL access data.
When the device arrives, all it needs is to be powered up and plugged into the network. As soon as an Internet connection is established, it is recognized by the cloud controller, supplied with the planned configuration parameters and the desired firmware version – all via a VPN connection.
And if a defective device needs to be replaced, it's easier still: Click on the defective device, enter the serial number of the replacement, and you’re done.
